How Schools can shape Positive Food and Body Image Relationships
I recently hosted a series of workshops for parents in the Philadelphia area about how to build a body accepting home environment and as happens at the end of a year, I’ve been reflecting on the impact parents have on their children’s relationship with food and their body and it’s gotten me thinking a lot about the influence schools have on this relationship as well.
As parents and educators, we all want our children to grow into confident, resilient individuals who embrace their unique selves. However, in today’s world, where social media and societal pressures often dictate narrow definitions of beauty, this can feel like an uphill battle.
That’s why schools have a unique and powerful opportunity to foster body-positive environments that help the next generation develop healthy relationships with food and their bodies.
But What Does Body-Positive Education Look Like?
For Pre-K and Lower School Students
Young children are incredibly impressionable. By introducing positive language around food and body diversity through stories and activities, we can instill confidence and curiosity, creating a strong foundation for healthy attitudes.
For Middle School Students
Middle schoolers face a complex mix of body changes, peer dynamics, and media influence. Workshops tailored to this age group provide the tools to build self-esteem and resilience during this critical time.
For High School Students
As societal pressures peak in high school, students benefit from advanced discussions on media literacy, self-esteem, and diet culture. I also offer body image support groups for teens to create a safe space for peer-led, empathetic dialogue and connection.
How Schools Can Lead the Way
Beyond helping students, schools have a broader role to play in creating a culture that values body diversity and acceptance. By training staff and integrating these principles into Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion efforts, schools can empower all students to thrive and feel seen.
This mission aligns with my core values:
Body Diversity & Inclusion: All bodies are good bodies.
Empowerment Through Education: Knowledge is power.
Intersectional Equity: True inclusion considers all identities.
Compassion-Driven Care: Every person deserves empathy and respect.
